Morning Sickness Remedies You’ll Want to Try!
If you’re newly pregnant and already riding that queasy wave of morning sickness: Mama, I see you. That first trimester nausea can hit hard and fast. Starting at any time of day and lasting all day—despite the misleading name. The good news? There are plenty of gentle and effective remedies that can help. From home-based tricks to locally available products right here in Northwest Indiana. I’ll be sharing as many remedies as I can, but if something worked for you (whether it’s on this list or not) drop it in the comments! You never know who you might help. 💛
I’ve been there myself. During my pregnancy, that nausea was no joke! It felt like nothing I tried was working. My OBGYN at Northwest Health prescribed a Vitamin B6 supplement, and once I started taking it, I finally felt some relief. Every pregnancy is different, but whether you’re hoping to go all-natural or are open to over-the-counter support, I’ve put together a list of remedies that actually help, plus where you can find them nearby!
Home Remedies to Try First
Sometimes the simplest approaches make the biggest difference.
1. Eat Small, Frequent Meals
An empty stomach can make the nausea so much worse. Keep easy snacks nearby: crackers, nuts, fresh fruit, granola, toast. Graze throughout the day. Don’t wait until you’re starving to eat (it backfires, ask me how I know!).
2. Cold Foods > Hot Foods
If the smell (or thought) of cooking makes you gag, try sticking to cold meals. Think smoothies, Greek yogurt (added protein!) parfaits, fruit, or even a simple bowl of cereal. It helped me so much when warm meals became too much to handle.
3. Sip on Ginger Tea
Ginger is a time-tested remedy for nausea. Brew a warm cup of ginger tea in the morning or sip it over ice throughout the day. Local shop, The Spice & Tea Exchange in Valparaiso, IN, has loose-leaf ginger blends like their Apricot Ginger Tea that are both soothing and delicious!
4. Keep Ginger Candies or Mints on Hand
Try ginger chews or peppermint candies when you’re on the go. Personally, I wouldn’t be caught out of the house without my spearmint gum through my first trimester! Ginger, spearmint, and peppermint flavors can help calm the stomach. I’ve found the Preggie Pop Drops helpful too (more on those below).
Helpful Products You Can Find Locally
If natural remedies aren’t quite cutting it, you’re not alone. Thankfully, there are several products designed specifically to target morning sickness, and many are available locally in store.
1. Preggie Pop Drops
These little hard candies are packed with natural flavors like ginger and sour lemon to help combat nausea.
✅ Available at Walmart in Michigan City (no need to wait on shipping!)
✅ You can also usually find them at Nature’s Cupboard in Chesterton, a lovely small business with lots of natural wellness items.
2. Sea-Bands
These nifty little wristbands use acupressure to ease nausea, and are great if you’re trying to avoid medications.
✅ Look for them at Walgreens in LaPorte, IN, or ask your local pharmacy to order them.
3. Vitamin B6 Supplements
As I mentioned earlier, my own OBGYN at Northwest Health: Porter County prescribed a nightly Vitamin B6 with Unisom, and it made a noticeable difference. Always talk to your provider before starting anything over the counter!
A Gentle Reminder, Mama
Morning sickness is rough, but it’s usually temporary. If your nausea is severe and you’re struggling to keep anything down (hello, hyperemesis gravidarum), please talk to your provider! We have some amazing Midwives (like the lovely ladies at Gentle Harbor Midwifery!) and OBGYNs in the area that can help you find support options so you aren’t suffering in silence.
You are not alone in this. Whether you’re sipping on ginger tea, wearing a nausea wristband, or sitting on the floor with saltines and a Sprite (been there too), just remember: this part doesn’t last forever. Your body is doing incredible work growing that little human, even when it doesn’t feel very magical in the moment. It will all be so worth it when you welcome that sweet new baby into your arms!
