Baby Drew—Full of Faith and Grace

There are stories that change you. That settle into your heart and stay with you long after the camera is packed away and the lights are dimmed. Miss Drew’s newborn session was one of those sessions for me.

I first met Breyana—Drew’s mama—during her maternity session, as part of her Baby Plan package that includes: maternity, newborn, and a milestone mini. From the very beginning, she shared her journey with transparency and courage. After a long road marked by loss, medical challenges, and deep spiritual growth, baby Drew was the answer to countless prayers. When her mama, radiant and full of grace, walked into my Michigan City studio for her maternity session months earlier, I knew we weren’t just capturing photographs. It was about faith. Healing. And the long-awaited arrival of a little girl who was already so deeply loved.

This journey didn’t begin with an immediate two pink lines or an ultrasound photo. It began with loss. With prayers whispered in the dark. With heartbreak that came not once, but twice. And then with something even more terrifying—a rare diagnosis following a molar pregnancy that turned into gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. A form of cancer.

Breyana bravely faced many procedures, blood draws, and the looming shadow of chemotherapy. She questioned everything—even her faith. She was angry. She was afraid. But, she was honest. She leaned into her community, into her marriage, and into God, even when she didn’t understand the why behind this journey. She journaled. She prayed. She showed up for herself with grace and grit.

And then—miraculously—her HCG numbers began to fall. No chemo. No more procedures. Just a quiet, hard-earned space to breathe, to rest, to begin healing. After everything she had endured, hope slowly crept back in. And then, heartbreak struck again. Another loss. But instead of unraveling, she held on tighter to her faith, trusting, deep down, that something beautiful was still coming.

And it did.

On the very day of her fertility consultation to begin searching for medical explanations, she found out she was pregnant again. With Miss Drew! The one who stayed. The one whose tiny kicks fluttered to tell her mama that healing was happening. That joy was returning.

Fast forward to our newborn session. Drew came a bit early and spent some time in the NICU, but she fought her way home with the same strength that brought her into her mother’s arms.

For her session, we chose colors that complimented the soft and sacred space at home: cream color whites, sage and olive greens, muted pink, and a touch of rich and timeless black. Earthy, grounded, and warm.

But the most meaningful moment? A special pose requested by mom: baby Drew resting gently atop the Bible. A powerful symbol of the prayers that carried them through the storms of their trying to conceive journey, the verses whispered in hospital rooms, the faith that cracked but never broke. That image will forever be one of my most cherished. A visual testimony to everything it took to bring this little girl earthside.

There was a reverence in the studio that day. Her mama sat beside me with tears in her eyes, watching the baby she had once only dared to hope for, safe and sleeping. The air was thick with love and relief and awe. And I felt it deeply—that I was witnessing something holy.

I often say that I don’t just take photos—I tell stories. And this is why. Because some stories deserve to be told with intention, tenderness, and truth. Because photos like these won’t just hang on their walls. They’ll live in their hearts. They’ll remind a little girl one day of how hard her parents fought for her. Of the faith that stitched her into existence. The journey that brought her home.

To Drew Elizabeth Jones:
You are proof that healing is possible. That joy can come after sorrow. That faith will move mountains. You are a rainbow after the darkest storm. A NICU warrior. A survivor. A living miracle.

To your gorgeous mama:
Thank you for trusting me. For sharing your journey so vulnerably. For reminding me why I do what I do. Your strength will echo through these images for generations, and I am truly so honored that you chose me to be a part of your family’s story.
